X-Men: Apocalypse: Elemental Review

Water: Is for Nightcrawler.  Nightcrawler is one of my favorite all-time superheroes.  I was most excited that he was getting another shot at the X-Men cinematic universe!  X-2 Nightcrawler was great, but this one was younger and fresh, very cool.  He did his part GREAT, except I wish that he had more screen time and more fighting sequences than just teleporting.  He has so many other abilities and talents.

Earth: Is for Egypt.  We all know that Apocalypse is old and has history in ancient Egypt.  I love anything to do with ancient Egypt.  I liked that they started the movie with the prologue of Apocalypse and that he was seen as a god.  I wish there was a little more about his original horsemen, but perhaps in the novelization.

Air: Is for Angel/Archangel.  Angel is another of my all-time favorite superheroes.  His screen time was pointless, just like Last Stand, but it was good to see him and GREAT to see him in a movie with Nightcrawler, especially their fighting scene!!!  However, his scene time was stupid and underplayed.  I wish someone would give him more slack.  I mean, they had Psylocke in the movie for God's sake!  The two of them have HUGE history.  His metal wings were pretty awesome though.  And that face tattoo in the end was cool too.

Fire: Is for speed...For two reasons.  One: the movie was rushed.  The X-Men movies fail because they try to cram too much into a certain amount of time.  I think Singer won with X-2 because the plot was slow moving and he took time to build characters and showcase their different standpoints and abilities.  Unfortunately, like every other X-Men movie, he lost sight of this fluidity and decided to speed through it with short origin story clips and cutting out scenes that could have been great (the mall scene I mentioned earlier).  Two: Quicksilver.  He completely stole the show.  Every moment he was given was flawless.  Now I don't know much about Quicksilver and his history (other than he's Magneto's son), but I don't remember him being funny and quirky.  I always thought he was kind of angry and borderline crazy.  Either way, I love the character he is in the X-Men cinematic universe.  He is SPOT on.  I'd love to see him interact with Deadpool.  Just seems like the two would banter perfectly together.

X-Men: Apocalypse was a good movie over all.  It wasn't the best X-Men movie.  I feel like X-2 and First Class are better, but it wasn't terrible.  It just moved too fast and it feels like the writers were too excited to move on to other things rather than taking their time with what they had.  I mean, Apocalypse was about to destroy the world as we know it and it never felt like it was that desperate or serious.

3 out of 5 stars
